Starting the New Year Strong: What to Expect When Soccer Classes Resume
Home » Starting the New Year Strong: What to Expect When Soccer Classes Resume
Welcome to 2026, Tiny Troops Soccer families! It’s a new year, and that means a fresh start to routines and renewed energy. Sometimes, though, it can mean uncertainty for young children returning to toddler soccer after winter break. After a long break, it’s completely normal for toddlers and preschoolers to need time to settle back into soccer. Even if your child enjoyed classes before, the first week back may look different, and that’s okay! Here’s what you can expect as we return to Soccer Island, along with simple tips to help your Tiny Trooper feel confident and ready.
Expect a Warm-Up Week (or 2!)
The first class back is less about picking up where your Tiny Trooper left off and more about reconnecting with the coach and the class. It’s about relearning the routines and expectations. It’s also about becoming comfortable once more. You might notice that your Tiny Trooper is hesitant to join in or has big emotions during class. They might have trouble following directions or have short attention spans. This doesn’t mean that your child has forgotten soccer. They’re simply readjusting to Soccer Island, the routine, their coaches, and their classmates.
Tip #1: Talk About Soccer Ahead of Time
Toddlers and preschoolers thrive on predictability. In the days leading up to class, talk about what to expect and what they will see in class. Remind them of things they did and learned last year.
- “Soccer is coming back this weekend!”
- “We’ll practice dribbling and play games.”
- “You’ll get to see Coach ____ again!”
- “I’ll be right there playing with you” (2 and under)/”I’ll be watching from the sidelines” (3+)
Tip #2: Expect Progress to Look Different at First
During the first classes back, your Tiny Trooper’s progress may look a little different as they adjust after winter break. They may be shy around their favorite coach or only join the group for part of the class. They might try an activity, then take a break. As parents, this may seem frustrating at first, but for toddlers and preschoolers, it is helping them build confidence one small step at a time.
- “Coach ____” is very excited to play with you today!”
- “Great job dribbling the ball. I love how you did little kicks.”
- “I love seeing you play with your friends.”
Tip #3: Your Child Hasn’t Lost What They Learned
Development doesn’t disappear when returning to toddler soccer after a break. Skills like dribbling, ball control, and listening and following directions return quickly once Tiny Troopers feel safe and engaged again. As a parent, it can be frustrating to see these skills “disappear”, but patience pays off. It’s also important to remember that growth isn’t always linear. Sometimes it’s a step or two backward, then one big leap forward. Our coaches expect this pattern and plan classes accordingly. We focus first on rebuilding joy and engagement because confident kids learn faster.
The new year isn’t about perfection. It’s about reconnecting, rebuilding routines, and giving kids the time they need to feel comfortable again. We’re excited to welcome families back to Soccer Island and start this next year together!
