Ask a Coach: How to Beat the Heat
Home » Ask a Coach: How to Beat the Heat
Coach Rachel here again, and this time I’m back with some tips for keeping cool in the heat. It’s that time of year when many of our locations are experiencing summer heat. Tiny Troops Soccer works hard to make sure each location stays cool, and our coaches stay informed. That said, we also have some tips for our Tiny Troops Soccer families on keeping cool when it heats up outside.
Bring Plenty of Water
Staying hydrated is always important, but it’s especially important when the temperatures rise. Make sure your child has a bottle of water for every class. If you forget water, your coach should have some small bottles of water on hand that you can use. Water breaks are built into the lesson, but if your little one needs extra breaks throughout class, they are encouraged to take a break. Coaches will also provide extra breaks as needed.
Dress for the Weather
Lightweight clothing is best for playing in the heat. Clothing should be in light colors that reflect the sun’s heat, rather than absorb it. Hats with brims can help keep the sun out of the eyes. Short-sleeve shirts or tank tops are ideal for staying cool, but if you’re concerned about sun exposure, opt for lightweight long-sleeve shirts made with built-in sun protection. Avoid wearing denim shorts, as they tend to trap heat.
Apply Sunscreen
Apply sunscreen before class to protect exposed skin from the sun. Don’t forget that on cloudy days the sun can still cause burns. Bring it along with you to reapply, especially if you plan to continue playing outdoors after class ends.
Know the Signs of Overheating
Our coaches keep a close eye on all participants for signs of overheating, but it’s always helpful when families are aware too. Symptoms of heat exhaustion can include:
-
Flushed or pale skin
-
Dizziness or confusion
-
Heavy sweating
-
Weakness or fatigue
If your child seems overly tired, unusually cranky, or uninterested in participating, let a coach know. It may be a sign that your child needs extra breaks.
When It’s Too Hot
Safety comes first. Tiny Troops Soccer has a detailed Heat Policy in place, and if conditions are too extreme, we may reschedule or cancel class. All coaches are aware of and follow the heat policy. They will contact an on-call specialist if conditions are met, and a decision will be made about classes at that time. Make sure to keep an eye on your email for any updates.
With your help, we can keep your Tiny Trooper cool, comfortable, and ready to play! Bring the water, pack the sunscreen, and let’s make the most of these sunny soccer days.
